Medium covered chestnut box

Description

This medium box is turned from Black Acacia (the box), mahogany (the lid), and padauk (the knob). I got some of this from folks in north Berkeley who had a large tree pruned back. This wood has some really dramatic contrast between the heartwood and sapwood, and was incredibly hard to turn although references claim it shouldn’t be that hard! It is finished with walnut oil and food-safe wax.

Note there is a fine check (crack) on one side (one of the challenges with salvaged wood), but this does not impact the structural integrity of the box.

The box is about 2 25″ high, and 4 3/8″ high with the lid and high finial.
